Powder Coating
Powder Coating is the process of applying a dry powder that is either a thermoplastic or thermoset polymer to the surface of a metal part. Parts are thoroughly cleaned with a phosphate cleaning solution in order to remove oil and other impurities from the surface of the part before shooting them.
The parts are hung up and a negative electric charge is attached to the part. The powder is sprayed on the the part using an electrostatic gun that positively charges the particles so that they stick to the surface of the metal work piece.

The part is then heated in an oven that is 400 degrees or more to cure the plastic on the surface of the work piece. As the temperature of the work piece rises the powder begins to melt and flows out to form a network structure. Powder coating generally adds about .003 to .005 inches to a part but is going to be one of the tougher cost effective coatings to apply to a part.
